OIA corrects the record

8 July 2021

On 3 July 2021, the Guardian & Tribune reported that Scenic Rim Councillor Derek Swanborough said “he had spoken with the state’s Independent Assessor, Kathleen Florian, as well as senior policy makers within the Department of Local Government who assured him that he was well within rights to advocate shifting the administrative boundaries of his electorate”.

Ms Florian did not provide that assurance or advice to Cr Swanborough.

The Independent Assessor has no opinion on this matter, either for or against.

The Guardian & Tribune confirmed that the above information was provided by Cr Swanborough.

Cr Swanborough did not respond to the Office of the Independent Assessor (OIA) when it attempted to provide him with an opportunity to correct the statement.

Ms Florian said she felt compelled to correct the record as the OIA was established to strengthen the integrity in local government in Queensland.
